TRAVEL DATA, WITHOUT THE GUESSWORK
Roaming or eSIM?
Run your own numbers.
Enter prices from your mobile provider and an eSIM offer. RoamRelay compares the trip total and flags when the eSIM allowance is too small.
WHY THIS TREND, NOW
Travel eSIM is moving into the mainstream.
GSMA reported in May 2026 that global eSIM smartphone penetration reached 5% at the end of 2025 and described 2026 as a shift towards operational scale. Ofcom’s February 2026 UK analysis found a large US-trip price gap, but only limited average savings for its EU example. The right answer still depends on the specific trip.
01 / BEFORE YOU BUY
Check the details that change the answer.
Coverage and speed
Check which local network the eSIM uses, whether 5G is included, and whether tethering, video or speed limits apply.
Calls and texts
Many travel eSIMs are data-only. Check how you will receive verification texts and make emergency or ordinary calls.
Activation window
Find out whether validity starts on installation, first connection or purchase. Do not activate too early.
Roaming controls
Disable data roaming on your home SIM if needed, set a spending limit and watch for accidental satellite roaming on ferries or cruises.
Refund terms
Read what happens if the eSIM will not install or coverage is poor. A low headline price is not useful without workable support.
Ofcom advises travellers to check provider charges before leaving, consider a local SIM or eSIM, and take extra care with maritime networks, where charges can be higher.
